An Outdoor Art Gallery of Site Specific Installations

The Tree Museum - A History
The Tree Museum was formed in 1997 in response to an opportunity to create site-specific artworks in a relatively remote region of Ontario, and includes both waterfront and forest. For the participating artists, this opportunity represents a rare occasion to realize major outdoor artworks in an uncultivated environment, with the physical support essential to execute works on this scale. Some of the works are permanent and others are of a transitory nature, with the elements and nature determining their life span. Collectively, the projects explore concepts of identity, memory and territory in respect to nature and natural processes, while underscoring the imbalance that characterizes our current relationship to the environment.

Since that first exhibition in 1998 the artists exhibiting at The Tree Museum continue to explore the relationship between Art and Nature.

NOT ALL OF THE WORKS THAT YOU SEE ON THE WEB SITE ARE ON THE SITE - SOME OF THE WORKS WERE TEMPORARY. JUST THERE FOR A SEASON. OTHERS OVER TIME HAVE DECAYED DUE TO WEATHER AND ARE REMOVED. OTHER WORKS ARE REMOVED FOR THE WINTER AND RE-INSTALLED AT THE END OF JUNE.

The Tree Museum 2011 exhibition is supported by Canada Council for the Arts.
