afterLandscape 2010

afterLandscape is a multi year project developed through the collaboration of the Tree Museum, Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada and Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre ACT, Namadgi National Park, The Australia National University School of Art, Canberra Glassworks and Megalo Print Studio, all based in Canberra, ACT Australia.

EJ Lightman and Anne O’Callaghan, co-curators invited- Penelope Stewart and Jeannie Thib to participate in 2009 in the project in Australia and at The Tree Museum, Muskoka, Ontario in 2010. Barbara McConchie Director, Craft ACT Design Museum Canberra invited the Australian Artists Bev Hogg and Trish Roan  to participate in the Tree Museum exhibition.
Canadian artists Stewart and Thib were chosen with the anticipation that they might challenge or even contradict and thereby expand the parameters and possibilities suggested by the site of the Tree Museum. omit section   Both Stewart and Thib are well known for their art practice in Canada, and have exhibited internationally, and participated extensively in International residencies They have proven records of executing successful work in unconventional circumstances and settings outside of traditional exhibition spaces.

The concepts, characteristics and final form of the work for the Australian artists, Bev Hogg and Trish Roan will not be determined until the artists have had the opportunity to engage with the site. These artists were selected for their potential to create works that respond to the full spectrum of the Tree Museum’s setting, a landscape quite different in texture and sound to the one they are familiar with in Australia.

As with all work developed at the Tree Museum, there is always an element of surprise.  Each artist responds to the site and interacts with nature and this becomes the journey of discovery.

Note Jeannie Thib and Penelope Stewart's will will be removed October 29/30 and will be re-installed in 2011.

Writers: Maralynn Cherry and Earl Miller will write the essays for the 2010 exhibition

Coming from Australia and arriving at the Tree Museum for the first time, I was
overwhelmed by the greenness, the softness of the earth and the abundance of water.

I am interested in the processes of life, the movement over time that takes place around us, and the constant wonder that often goes unnoticed in our everyday lives.

My practice is trans-disciplinary using modalities such as in situ installations, interventions, sculpture, photography and works on paper to explore invisible and imaginary architectures.

Jeannie Thib

My installations, sculptures, wall drawings, museum interventions and works on paper examine relationships between the decorative and the modern, between architecture and ornament, original and replica, culture and nature.
